Does your Resume Stand a Chance?
Before you decide to send or submit your resume to any job hunting site or send it to any
recruiter or company take a few minutes to ask yourself the following questions.  It is important
that you understand how resumes are sorted/discarded and how to make your resume stand
out from the rest.
How long is your resume?

Most resumes go to an unnecessary amount of detail resulting in a resume that is two or more
pages long.  You have to realize that the person looking at your resume will spend less than
20 or 30 seconds in each resume.  If your resume is more than one page long, it may be
discarded without even being looked at.

Does your resume include action words and accomplishments?

Recruiters and potential employers want to see what you have to offer and they like to see
proof of your ability to perform a job.  Your resume should be objective and include action
words as well as specific achievements.  Your resume should include numbers and quantities
in as much detail as possible.

Is your resume crowed or full of white space?

Your resume needs to be visually appealing.  Crowded resumes are easy to discard.  Your
resume needs to be displayed using bullets, and have plenty of white space.  This will convey
clarity and cleanliness to the person looking at your resume.  In addition it will make it easier
to browse through your resume pinpointing different areas.

Does your resume include an objective section?

It is important that you state the objective of your resume, this will summarize the points that
the recruiter/ potential employer need to focus when looking at your resume.  It is surprising
that many people neglect to include this section.

Have you run a spell check in your resume?

As trivial as this may seem, it is surprising the large number of individuals that submit resumes
with typos and misspelled words.  This probably ranks as the best method to get your resume
tossed.

Things to exclude from your resume?

It is unprofessional to include gender, marital status, height, weight, health or any other
personal statistics.  You should avoid abbreviations or acronyms, assume your interviewer is
not familiar with them.

Does your resume get you interviews?

This is the ultimate test and the only one you absolutely need to pass.  If you are not getting
interviews the best advice is to get professional advice writing your resume.  There could be a
number of reasons you are not getting interviews.  Your resume may lack accomplishments,
or may be missing any of the points mentioned above.  At My Next Promotion we will help you
